Observation

It is very easy for a misplaced item to become a lost item.

Keeping Track of Things

I am officially starting the third week of my Industrial Design Senior Studio at the Savannah College of Art and Design. We have been given the task to design a product or service that solves a real problem, enhances user experience, fufills the user’s wants and needs, and considers long term consequenses in society, the environment, and economy. The problem space I have chosen is keeping track of personal belongings.

I have already submitted a project proposal and I am currently in the research portion of my design process. I will be dividing my research into three categories:

1. Initial Research

This will involve basic internet and book driven research focusing on competitive, technological, market, trend, and legal research.

2. Cultural Probe/Market Research

This will involve the selection of three volunteers that fit the young professional demographic. The participants will be asked to take pictures of their own significant personal belongings. After printing the pictures, the volunteers will be asked a series of questions while reviewing the pictures. This will enable the recognition of user wants and needs, while finding design oppertunities for documentation and analysis.

3. Empathetic Research

Empathetic research will involve putting myself in the situation of the problem space. I will make a list of my own significant personal belongings, and allow an outside source to steal or hide a randomly selected item from the me everyday for five days. At the end of the day the item will be returned and I will document the impact it had on my thoughts and actions.

I will try to keep everyone updated on my progress throughout the design process. Feel free to add any questions or comments along the way.

HowStuffWorks “How does a pet microchip implant work?”
This article relates to my problem statement of keeping track of personal belongings. In this case the personal belonging is a pet.
